Protein Tracker is a mobile app concept designed for people who have recently started going to the gym and want a simple way to keep track of their daily protein intake.
For many beginners, protein is one of the first nutrition goals they are introduced to. However, staying consistent can be difficult when tracking becomes time-consuming or complicated.
This project explores how a focused tracking experience could help beginners build a sustainable habit around meeting their daily protein goals.
Most people who start going to the gym aren't trying to master nutrition on day one. They're usually trying to do something much simpler: eat enough protein to support their fitness goals.
However, many nutrition apps immediately introduce calories, carbohydrates, fats, fiber, serving sizes, food databases, and multiple nutritional targets at the same time.
A simple meal quickly turns into a series of decisions.
Users need to search for foods, choose the correct entry, adjust quantities, and interpret several nutritional values before they can answer a basic question:
"Did I get enough protein today?"
For beginners, the challenge is often not tracking itself. It's staying consistent when every meal requires effort.
The effort required to log a meal often felt greater than the value users received from tracking it. What should have been a simple daily habit gradually started to feel like work.
To understand why people stop tracking consistently, I reviewed fitness app reviews, online discussions, and spoke informally with beginner gym-goers. While the sources were different, the frustrations were surprisingly similar.
"By the time I log a simple meal, it feels like work."
"I know I should track protein, but tracking everything else feels overwhelming. I usually just estimate."
"Searching and selecting food every time gets annoying, so eventually I stop logging."
Across reviews and informal conversations, a common pattern emerged: beginners rarely stopped caring about protein. Instead, they stopped tracking accurately. As logging became more effortful, users began estimating their intake or abandoned tracking altogether.
After reviewing user feedback and reflecting on my own experience, one thing became clear:
